ready to tackle city community projects on Saturday, Oct. 25
Goodyear
gears up for Make-A-Difference Day
Volunteers from
the city of Goodyear and numerous community organizations are ready to tackle
community projects that will help improve its neighborhoods and parks.
Make-A-Difference
Day will be Saturday, Oct. 25 as groups consisting of dozens of volunteers will
first meet at City Hall, 190 North Litchfield Road beginning at 7 a.m. before
moving on to various tasks.
Make a Difference
Day, held annually the fourth Saturday in October, is the largest national day
of volunteering - a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.
In Goodyear, adult
and teen volunteers work together on projects such as painting homes of
seniors, cleaning up alleyways, cutting overgrown underbrush and painting over
walls marred by graffiti.
“We’re excited
that another year has arrived for community groups to work together and help
complete some projects that wouldn’t get done otherwise,” said Evelyn Howell, a
volunteer for the city. “I especially love to see the kids working on their
assigned tasks side by side with their parents who set an excellent example.”
Last year, about
250 volunteers worked more than 850 hours (a value of about $19,000),
completing eight different projects such as painting the homes of two Goodyear
senior residents, giving the fence of Goodyear Community Park’s Skate Park a
fresh coat of paint, painting nearly 75 fire hydrants in Estrella, and
distributing door hangers with information on local social service agencies to
more than 400 homes in Historic Goodyear.
Among the volunteer groups participating
will be: Desert Edge High School, Estrella Foothills High School, Millennium
High School, Verrado High School, Estrella Mountain Elementary School, Franklin
Pierce University, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Palm Valley
Church, New Foundation Church and Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
