A zoning ordinance is the local law that guides how land in a community can be used and developed. It divides the city into different zoning districts—such as residential, commercial, industrial, and mixed‑use—and establishes the rules for what can be built in each area. These regulations cover things like building height, placement, density, parking, landscaping, and signage.

By setting clear standards, the zoning ordinance helps ensure that new development is compatible with surrounding areas, supports community goals, and maintains the health, safety, and quality of life for residents.

The City Council, at their regularly scheduled meeting on July 6, approved a comprehensive update to the City’s Zoning Ordinance. The updated ordinance takes effect on August 5, 2026. All new planning applications submitted on or after August 5, 2026, must comply with the updated Zoning Ordinance.
