1. Fill out the online application. (2026 Applications open in January)
2. Complete the course and obtain your lifeguard certification.
3. Qualified candidates will be invited to an interview and water skills evaluation.
Hybrid Lifeguard Certification Course
Course Prerequisites:
Must be 15 years of age or older
- Swim 50 yards continuous with head up
- Swim 50 yards continuous with a rescue tube across the chest
- Tread water for 1 minute without use of the hands
- Retrieve a 10 lb. brick at a depth of 12 feet
*Participants will go through the prerequisite screening at the lifeguard orientation on February 26. Those who do not pass the prerequisites after 3 tries will not be able to proceed in the course.
Mandatory Orientation: Thursday, February 26 from 5-8 p.m.
Cost: FREE

City of Goodyear Jr. Lifeguard Program
Learn. Grow. Make a Splash!

Jr. Guard is a summer development program for teens aged 13-15. Participants gain hands-on experience in water safety and lifeguarding, while building professional skills like communication, teamwork, and leadership. The program prepares teens for future lifeguard certification and employment with the City of Goodyear. Upon completion, Jr. Guards receive a shirt, hat, whistle, CPR mask and the opportunity to volunteer at City of Goodyear pools, gaining real-world experience alongside lifeguard staff!
Course Prerequisites:
- Must be at least 13 years old by first day of class. Must be no older than 15 on the first day of class.
- Participants must pass a water skills screening test:
- Swim 25 yards without stopping
- Tread water for 30 seconds with hands
- Retrieve weighted object off the bottom
*This program does not teach swimming skills*

Jr. Guard provides a bridge from summer activity to future employability! Participants of Jr. Guard/ GRC U will gain:
- Real world skills: Learn water safety, emergency response (CPR & First Aid) and basic lifeguarding skills in a hands-on environment.
- Build professional confidence: Develop workplace skills such as interview confidence, email etiquette, communication & teamwork!
- Prepare for future employment: Get early exposure to lifeguarding responsivities & staff members. Jr. Guards gain a one-day early access to high-demand City of Goodyear Lifeguarding courses!
- Equipment: included in course registration participants are given a shirt, hat, whistle and CPR mask!
GRC U provides participants with the knowledge of professional development skills & the ability to leverage them into employment with the City of Goodyear!

Hybrid Swim Lesson Instructor Course
Must be 16 years of age or older
Those interested in teaching swim lessons must be a certified swim lesson instructor. Participants will learn how to teach developmentally appropriate swimming and water safety skills for individuals from 6 months to adult. This course has both an online and an in-person portion. The online portion must be completed prior to the first in-person class.
Cost: FREE (Must be enrolled in a City of Goodyear Lifeguard course)
