Where does our water come from?

Each valley city has a unique water portfolio that requires different management. Goodyear utilizes both groundwater and surface water. Wells throughout the city pump water from underneath the ground, while surface water is delivered from the Colorado River to the Water Treatment Facility. Both are treated and delivered it to customers through a vast network of pipes and infrastructure.

Colorado River

Surface water is water that comes from rain or snowmelt. The city’s surface water supply comes from the Colorado River Basin and is delivered by the Central Arizona Project (CAP), a 366-mile-system of aqueducts, pumps, and pipelines which transports Colorado River water throughout the state. The CAP water supply is managed and delivered by the Central Arizona Water Conservation District (CAWCD) which is responsible for delivering approximately 1.5 million acre-feet of Colorado River water to water users in central and southern Arizona.

Goodyear receives its CAP water allocation and treats it at the Surface Water Treatment Plant. The city also recharges excess CAP water into the aquifer to bank for future use

Groundwater

Groundwater is water that exists underground in the cracks and spaces in rocks and soils. The City of Goodyear has been allotted a groundwater allocation by the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) and is permitted to pump groundwater.

All of our groundwater water is pumped through production wells. These wells are located throughout the City to provide sufficient flows and pressures. The aquifer from which we draw groundwater is called the West Salt River Valley Sub-Basin. To ensure the long-term sustainability of groundwater the city off-sets its groundwater pumping by recharging the aquifer.

Reclaimed Water

Reclaimed water is treated, recycled wastewater of a high quality suitable for non-potable applications, such as irrigation, decorative water features, construction dust control, and recharge. The City of Goodyear treats wastewater to the highest quality to produce A+ reclaimed water, the highest class of reclaimed water. Reclaimed water is an important component of Goodyear's water portfolio.

For years, the City of Goodyear has recharged reclaimed water to replenish the aquifer. The reclaimed water percolates into the subsurface where it is stored for future use. This reserve supply of water can be used in time of shortage. Goodyear conducts the banking of surplus reclaimed water at the Soil Aquifer Treatment Facility (SAT) which is owned and managed by the city.
